Grants to Walker County Area, Alabama nonprofit organizations, public school systems, libraries, colleges, and universities for a broad range of activities that benefit local communities. Program areas include arts and humanities, children and youth, education, elder care, environment, health and medicine, recreation, and social welfare.

In order to make the greatest impact with the funds available, the Foundation prefers requests that:
-Address a critical community need.
-Get at the root causes of a problem
-Do not duplicate existing services unless they serve a population not already being served
-Are pilot projects which, if successful, can be expanded to serve a wider population or be duplicated by other organizations
-Involve collaboration and cooperation with other organizations and agencies
-Include an effective mechanism for measuring the impact of The Community Foundation’s investment.

The Funds participating in this competitive grants process include the following:

-Community Fund: The Community Fund is an endowment fund that enables the Walker Area Community Foundation to respond strategically to community issues as they arise. The Community Fund supports a wide variety of subject areas and organizations through a competitive grants process and other special initiatives.

-Bankhead Fund: Bankhead Fund was started by Walter Will Bankhead and has a long history of providing general philanthropic dollars for nonprofits.

-Matthew Crump Fund: Matthew Crump Fund supports the efforts of men and women engaged in emergency response positions and provides material support to special needs citizens of Walker County.

-Reed Family Fund: Reed Family Fund supports general philanthropy while keeping in mind the importance of serving the basic needs of Walker County families.

-Rotary Club of Jasper Fund: Rotary Club of Jasper Fund is an endowment fund of the Rotary Club of Jasper. This fund strives to improve the quality of life for families and individuals in the local community.

-Samuel Lee Smith Advised Fund: Samuel Lee Smith Advised Fund helps children and youth live their lives to the fullest by making grants to encourage strong health, athletics, scouting, religion and the arts, especially to those who need financial assistance.

Because the Foundation cannot provide ongoing support, plans for future funding are critical. The Foundation believes that sound and realistic financial planning must underlie any request.

Term of Contract:

Applicants will not be funded on an ongoing annual basis unless the terms of the grant specifically provide for multi-year funding.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Qualified 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations may apply.

Requests from public school systems must come from the superintendent's office. If the request is for an individual school, it must be for a pilot project that, if successful, would be duplicated in other schools in the system.

-Operate under sound financial principles
